講演者:Patrick Greenough (University of St Andrews)
講演題目:Is Conceptual Engineering Hopelessly Utopian?

講演要旨:Conceptual Engineering is the view that to make progress on philosophical puzzles we must either revise the meaning of the words used to generate the puzzle or replace these words with new and better surrogates. One objection such a project faces is The Utopian Problem, the problem that all forms of Conceptual Engineering simply cannot be carried out–they are hopelessly utopian, fundamentally quixotic. Milder forms of the Problem say that Conceptual Engineering is highly impractical, or very costly, or much more difficult to carry out than its competitor views. Some say that Conceptual Engineering is akin to Utopian Socialism: a laudable idea, but without any method or manual it is doomed to failure. In this talk I look at various incarnations of the Utopian Problem together with two broad responses. The first of these comes from a character I call The Tryer–who acknowledges that Conceptual Engineering is a difficult and uncontrollable process but urges us that we try to carry it out in any case. The second character is Polyanna–the eternal optimist who thinks that there is evidence everywhere that Conceptual Engineering can and does succeed. The story to be told argues that though The Tryer offers a much more convincing response to The Utopian Problem than Polyanna, neither response is needed because it turns out that the success-conditions for a Conceptual Engineering project are much lower than previously advertised. Solving a philosophical puzzle via Conceptual Engineering does not require that the meaning of a word be revised or replaced, or so I shall argue.
